The bar at Salt & Vine at dusk — marble counter, candlelight, shelves of wine and a sea view through the sash window

Natural wine bar · Margate

Thirty-odd bottles, changed every Tuesday.

A small room at the top of the cliff, most of it given over to wine we actually want to drink. Small plates until ten. No bookings for tables under six — just come in.

Skin-contact Pinot Gris£8.50

Alsace, 2024. Apricot skin and a bit of grip. The one we pour most.

Pét-nat Chardonnay£9.00

Loire. Cloudy, bone dry, faintly bready. Opens the evening well.

Gamay£8.00

Beaujolais. Chilled, light, all red fruit. Drinks like a summer evening.

Jura. Pale, savoury, a little wild. Ask before you commit to a bottle.

Xarel·lo£7.50

Penedès. Salty and lemony. Made for the anchovies.

Kentish cider£6.00

Wild-fermented, from up the road. For the one in every group who doesn't drink wine.

Bottles from £28 — around sixty on the shelf at any time, and you can drink any of them here for £10 corkage or take them away. If you tell us what you normally like, we'll find you something better.

Ten minutes up the hill from the station, past the shell grotto. There are twenty-two seats and we keep most of them for walk-ins — if there's no room we'll take your number and text you when a table goes.

Six or more?

That we do book — and we can put a list together for you in advance, or open the back room for a tasting. Tell us roughly when and how many, and we'll come back to you the same day.
